The Ride 001: Point of No Return

The blog begins…

The last time I rode to Leh was in 2008 and some of the memories from that time are captured here. When Setu and I left from there we knew we wanted to be back someday. Since then there have been some small rides. Setu works off a different continent now and I have grown older :-)

Ashish has always been a part of our own desi version of the Wild Hogs (see here) and he has also paid his tributes to the Himalayas.

It was just logical that we’d now get together again for a ride. Ashish and I started planning a ride again a few months ago. It was going to be destination Leh again. The usual stuff around planning work schedules, getting vacation, etc. was required. We’d like to believe that we are so critical at our work place that our absence for 2 weeks would hamper normal functioning. When we come back and find that it really hasn’t, we’d again like to believe that we have planned our schedules and vacation so well that we minimized disruption to work. Delusions of grandeur, indeed!

As we started working out the details we began to fall in love… whoa there… hold your horses… I meant to say that we fell in love with the pictures of Spiti valley. Not to mention that Ashish and some buddies of his had been till Rampur on their previous trip and they were gushing about the place. Some more reading about it in various blogs and forums and we were hooked to that idea.

In any case, first things first. An essential ingredient of good planning is to demonstrate commitment to the objective. Hence we shipped our bikes off today. Now we are forced to plan the rest. Or at the least, at least have to go to Delhi to get the bikes back.

And while we were waiting for the bikes to be shipped I was busy. For those who don’t know, the places we go to usually don’t have a data connection (2G/3G/whatever). Most places support only good ol’ SMS. So, in order to send out updates I need an SMS based mechanism. Worked on ancient Web 2.0 technology. Managed to figure out how to get the blog to forward to twitter and Facebook. Then realized I can’t update blog via SMS. So configured twitter to forward to Facebook. Oops! Cyclic forwarding. Hoped that I wasn’t going to responsible for bringing down the Internet with a post-forward-cycle. Fortunately that didn’t happen (I mean, we are all still here, aren’t we?). Fixed that. Now I have a functional system. I can post to twitter which will then forward to Facebook (to take care of FB friends). The post will also update the blog (for those who are not on FB, e.g. senior citizens of the family). I also managed to configure twitter to post to our workplace communication system (you must really check out tibbr). This will update our work-colleagues, who I am sure will miss during our vacation ;-)

And hence this post. The plan is to update this regular with status of the trip.

The Rise of Decadence

At first it was the Westerners. Blind aping of their customs and practices, as evidenced in their television shows, caused irreversibile damage to the Indian way of life. Our youth was seduced by the dark side of Western culture (so much that even the word ‘seduced’ wouldn’t have been used earlier).

The Ramayana and Mahabharata were worthy of multi-year TV episodes, and the riches from that were a mere by-product of good karma. But a vast majority of the other 330 million dieties were not as accomodating of such exploitation. Hence the producers had to fall back on human frailties to market their wares. Soaps were a consequence of that.

It was easy to accept that the “North Indian” TV viewers would fall first. “They are like that Wonly” was the common refrain. The Dravidian cultural bastion held strong.

And besides, what chance did they really have against Ekta Kapoor?

So when the soaps started out in the South Indian world they stuck to the high values of denigrating woen, propagating male chauvinism, highlighting inferior human qualities, and generally pandering to the base emotions. But atleast the women were all regional, wore the appropriate Kanchipuram silks, and used crass language.

But alas, the juggernaut has continued to roll. Horror of horrors, we now have Ekta Kapoor shows dubbed in Tamil!!! Aiyayyo pochhu! Tamil honor has boarded a ship and gone.

This makes for weird scenarios. A very North Indian looking character speaking in chaste Tamil. People calling each other “kaka”, “baba”, etc. Unspeakable.

Why don’t they just make animated soaps and dub it in all languages ? Easy no?

The Grand Unified Social Network (GUnSoN)

I hate trying to keep up with technology. I am about 5 years behind the technology curve, I think. I spent the weekend trying to find out the perfect way to integrate my (proposed) blog, twitter and Facebook. Several test messages added to the entropy of the internet. I pushed my creativity to the limits in trying to come up with unique test messages (since I couldn’t figure out which was the relevant test message otherwise). And finally, close to the stroke of the midnight hour, as the world slept, my social networks were unified.

Until Google+ opened up invites and more of my friends started joining it.

I hate trying to keep up with technology. Now I have to figure out how to integrate G+ into this mess.

Acer Iconia A500 with Honeycomb 3.1

It’s been a few weeks since I upgraded my Acer Iconia A500 tablet to Honeycomb 3.1 using a custom ROM from Xda-developers. It’s  been a pleasant experience thus far.

The UI itself is more responsive now than earlier. Widgets are now resizeable on the home page. Resizeable widgets are cool. I can, for example, resize the email widget so that I get to see more of my corporate email without scrolling/clicking.

Support for a USB (wireless) mouse is a good enhancement too. I can now add a controller for a mouse and a keyboard and use it like a mini-laptop. Mouse wheel works intuitively to scroll in a list or switch screens when scrolled on  the desktop. Excle /spreadsheets will be easier now.

The USB 2.0 port supports USB hubs. I am not sure if this was a 3.1 feature or existed from earlier. I attached a USB thumb drive and a wireless adapter for a keyboard and mouse and they all worked.

Being Android, there is good support for Google stuff like Google+, talk, Gmail, etc.

Support for 3g adapters (Huawei) is still iffy and I haven’t gotten around to poking around for that yet.

Planning begins for the ride. …

Planning begins for the ride. First to-do: get a good raincoat/poncho.

You are riding your bike and you feel something cold creep down your spine. You know your raincoat has then failed you.

Over the years I have tried several raincoats for riding a two-wheeler and they have all failed. It appears that stitched seams are the bad ‘uns. The water seeps through the seams and gets past your defenses. Pretty soon your nether regions are wet and when you do take off the raincoat, you’ve got some ‘splaining to do!

Ride to Lavasa

Wanted to do something special for our 17th anniversary and so decided to do a bike ride. Since my in-laws were visiting and it was a Sunday, we were able to leave the kids at home and head out for a few hours. Planned to head to Lavasa about 40-50 kms away from Pune.

The weather was awesome when starting off. There were a few drizzles along the way. Stopped to pick up some roasted corn on the cob and it was great eating that while standing under a canopy with rain all around.

The rain got really nasty as we entered Lavasa and then we decided that that was enough. Turned around and headed home.
